We’ve now stopped showcasing readers’ photos in this space, although we still have a Photo of the Month page in our printed magazine and will soon be publishing them on our Facebook page.
The best reader’s photo of the month is published in the Viva Lewes handbook, with a prize of £20. Please send your (hi-res 300dpi or more) pics into [email protected], with a short description of when and why you took them. Viva Lewes reserve the right to use pictures in future editions of Viva magazines unless otherwise arranged. [CLICK IMAGES TO ENLARGE]
- After eight years on the job, I [Alex] am finally retiring from doing this ‘Photo of the week’ column: it’s felt like a little family so I’d like to thank our regular contributors down the years, many of whom have sent in this week. Including the inimitable Graham Parks, who sent us this rather marvellous filled-frame shot of the chairs at the Eastbourne bandstand.
- “I was inspired to take several photos following the wreath laying ceremony at Lewes War Memorial on Sunday,” writes John Hinitt, whose name we misspelt between 2008 and 2010 (sorry John!)“And with the help of Adobe Lightroom and other software hope in some small degree to have captured the essence of the day.”
- Here’s another of the War Memorial by John H.
- And now one from John Stockdale. “Round-headed rampion (Phyteuma orbiculare), the county flower for Sussex, photographed on Malling Down last week,” he explains. “I don’t know if they are rare or just difficult to spot because they are so small and from a distance look like, well, any plant with small blue flowers. A first for me. Each ‘petal’is in fact a separate flower. Apologies if the rest of the world is going: “Yeah, yeah, if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all”.
- “Two from the recent Ringmer Steam and Country Show (you choose)” writes Rick Turner. ”A young lad proud of his dirty face earned in the age of steam…” The one we didn’t choose, which seemed less appropriately Dickensian, was in colour.
- “I’m submitting this image because it is a glorious representation of the Miss Alternative Snowdrop contest,” writes Roz Bassford-South. “It features “Joyce” who won for the second year running flanked by the beautiful hosts Tanya Hyde and Dame Edith Fiddleworth. Quite honestly, it speaks for itself without an added commentary from me!” Joyce, btw, was formerly a Mayor of this lovely County Town.
- Here’s a more sombre-mooded one from Nick Robinson. “Lewes Town councillors at British Legion memorial service held on Sunday the 3rd of August,” he tells us. Nick also suggests a ‘comments’ section after each photo. One for the future, maybe.
- And finally, a great shot from Rebecca King. “This photograph was taken at Arlington reservoir. We’re trying to make the most of these glorious sunny days and long evenings. We were looking for more interesting birds to photograph. We saw a great-crested grebe and a corn bunting but I was pretty pleased with this photograph of a ordinary seagull.” Which marks the end of an era. Please send future photos to [email protected]. Tara, folks!
